If love is the ultimate prize, then the perils of courtship are the necessary trials and tribulations one must endure in its pursuit. It is a blessing for the society debutantes of London, then, that Cupid’s arrow should be guided by the dainty hand of Miss Laura Pendleton, granddaughter of Countess Pendleton and the city’s finest matchmaker. When Laura’s self-ascribed duties call her to befriend the stoic and saturnine Mr. Ian Dalton of Whitefield, however, she soon finds that when it comes to the grand contest of love, it may well be every woman for herself…
Is Miss Pendleton worth reading? Short review
If you’re a fan of Bridgerton, you’ll love Miss Pendleton – unless you’re only in it for the spice, because Miss Pendleton isn’t spicy at all. It’s about Laura Pendleton, who is known as a spinster in high society but has exceptional social skills. That’s why she’s also called the matchmaker. Before the ML, Ian Dalton, comes to town, his friend William asks Laura to guide him through high society. And after the very first dance, the antisocial bachelor has basically already fallen for her. Or at least he’s interested.
art
The art by kkomak is gorgeous. It’s very clean and, while nothing you haven’t seen before, fits the setting perfectly. In the afterword of Season 1, kkomak shared an in-depth look at how the episodes come to be. Step 1: Story adaptation. Step 2: Art overview. Step 3: Rough sketch work. Step 4: Assistant fills in the backgrounds. Step 5: Line drawing. Step 6: Coloring assistant shades and adds details. Step 7: Retouching.
romance
The romance in Miss Pendleton is very slow. And although the chemistry is there, it’s not really tension – they just gradually grow closer. But it’s really satisfying to see how hard Ian falls for Laura and how passionately he supports her from afar, even as she keeps pushing him away.
characters
Miss Pendleton has many likeable characters, but also a very hateable antagonist: her uncle. This guy is beyond saving. I hope he gets what he deserves and loses his fortune. Beyond him, it’s interesting to see how differently the women are portrayed – one group that abides by society’s rules and is full of prejudice, and others who want to make a name for themselves, like Laura or Jane.
protagonists
The protagonists are Laura Pendleton and Ian Dalton. Ian is the definition of a green flag. He’s a wealthy bachelor with no interest in mingling in high society or even marrying – but when he meets Laura, he completely changes his perspective. He also adapts his whole approach to match her pace, because he’s determined to marry her.
Laura is a very strong female lead. Not physically, but mentally: although she suffered a lot of abuse from her uncle, she’s determined to make a name for herself and not depend on anyone.
Read if you…
- don’t mind when the “historical” part isn’t very accurate – but let’s be honest, that’s true for most romance manhwa
- love an FL who’s calm and collected
- like it when the ML falls first and is a green flag
- want a historical romance manhwa that isn’t an isekai and where the FL isn’t a regressor
Skip if you…
- aren’t into Jane Austen–style language, because some of the vocabulary can be hard to follow
- are in the mood for a romcom – Miss Pendleton is a calm historical, no chibi moments or comedic sequences
- don’t like slow burns
- are sensitive to domestic abuse. There’s only one scene and it’s brief, but it’s shown realistically – her uncle is ruthless
