The Beloved Incompetent Stepmom: A Short Review
The Beloved Incompetent Stepmom is a sweet comfort read – especially in the first half. After that, it becomes more political, or at least the mysteries they were trying to build up finally get explored.
It is a story you have probably read a hundred times: our FL Elsha gets treated horribly by her family – especially her sister – yet again, for no apparent reason. She gets married off to Archduke Iceberg (Rolf), the infamous war hero, who turns out to be sweet and kind, just misunderstood and a little clumsy.
I know this sounds like a very generic story, but it is told quite well. The writing is good, and the author takes their time exploring scenes instead of rushing through them.
So I would definitely recommend The Beloved Incompetent Stepmom if you want a lighthearted read.
artstyle and storytelling
The art is good. The proportions are well drawn, the characters don’t only have one expression, and when they cast magic, it just looks beautiful. The story is well written, although there are some strange storytelling choices.
For example, one day her sister just shows up at the Archduke’s home, harasses Elsha in the hallway, the children stand up for her, and then the sister just… vanishes? She obviously goes back home, but it isn’t addressed and feels out of place. There are some other moments like that throughout the story.
romance: very slow but sweet (much skinship but little progress)
Elsha and Rolf do get close very fast, but then they just linger in that contract-marriage closeness without really going further or talking about their feelings. They definitely need more communication. Their first kiss was also very random:
Show Spoiler
At one point they both drink an aphrodisiac and Elsha gets completely knocked out because of it. Rolf has an antidote and give it to her – you guessed it – mouth to mouth. To me it felt really out of place because they haven’t really talked about anything but the children at this point.
characters: obvious good guys and obvious bad guys
The antagonists in The Beloved Incompetent Stepmom really are comically bad. They have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and although her father somewhat gets a redemption arc, it doesn’t help much. So don’t expect grey characters in this one.
But all in all, the main cast is very likeable. The stars of the show are Wilbert and Hugh. They are the ones who make this story so extremely heartwarming.
protagonists: stoic Duke ML, bubbly outgoing FL
Elsha is very outspoken and stays extremely positive in every situation. Although she is not an OP FL, I would still call her mentally strong. There is also a mystery storyline surrounding her abilities, so maybe she will kick some ass down the line. Her best trait, though, is how she interacts with the children.
Rolf is introduced as this cold duke, and as these stories go, you find out more and more why he turned out the way he did. But I do wish he would be more open or reflective about his behavior. He is a pretty blank slate and definitely not a decisive reason to read this manhwa.
Read if you…
- love the contract marriage and childcare trope. Wilbert, Hugh, and Elsha bond almost immediately, and it is well written
- love when the ML blushes too
- like when a story takes its time to show characters’ emotions and not just brush over them
- like when a previously hated FL finds a new home for EVERYBODY love her
Skip if you…
- don’t like it when the antagonists are comically bad for no reason and behave so abnormally badly just to make the main cast look better
- don’t like it when childcare manhwa go a bit overboard with the cuteness. There are literally whole chapters just to show how extremely cute Hugh and Wilbert are (talking about the small contest arc)
- expect a refreshing story you haven’t read before
- quickly lose patience with stories where the MCs don’t really talk about their feelings and the progress is very slow
Dismissed as incompetent and neglected by her family, the Duke’s daughter, Elsha, is suddenly ordered to marry the infamous Archduke Iceberg—a war hero feared for his ruthless reputation. Rather than despair, she seizes this chance for a fresh start. But upon arriving at his manor, she finds the Archduke missing and is instead met by his wary adopted sons, Wilbert and Hugh—who had no idea their father was remarrying. With an absent husband, distrustful stepchildren, and a manor full of secrets, can Elsha carve out a place for herself and find happiness at last?
