Romance doesn’t always have to be sunshine, rainbows and happy endings. Sometimes the best stories are the ones that make you feel all the feels. So if you’re into red flags and don’t mind absolutely toxic – and I’m talking Game of Thrones sibling-love toxic level – buckle up, because you will definitely find something on this list. It’s ranked from least toxic to most toxic. Enjoy!
Beatrice
Summary: The ML Alexandro is cold, ruthless, and doesn’t hesitate to kill for his goals – especially at the start. He spares the female lead, Beatrice, who disguises herself as a slave named “Chloe” to survive. As his personal maid, she slowly catches his attention. While Alexandro is a total jerk, his portrayal feels more historically believable than the usual “war hero with a perfect personality” we often see in manhwa.
How dark is it?
Beatrice starts off dark and becomes pure fluff and rainbows. So if that’s not your thing, better skip it. Alexandro hates people, but he hates himself and his past the most. His abusive childhood doesn’t excuse his actions, but it makes them more realistic. Chloe, on the other hand, is kind, bubbly, and content with little things.
You should read if you:
- like a story with A LOT of character development
- don’t mind a female lead whose only goal is survival – and who gets pushed around a lot
- don’t mind heavy fanservice (abs — abs everywhere) and an isekai element that feels completely unnecessary
When Jasy Whistles
Summary: In the past, people commonly believed that the woods of Paraguay were filled with deities and mythical creatures. Hela, who grew up on the outskirts of Paraguay’s capital, didn’t think much of these old stories. But when her best friend disappears – allegedly taken by the mythical figure Jasy Jatere – Hela realizes that these ancient myths are still very much alive.
How dark is it?
Don’t laugh at me for putting When Jasy Whistles on this list (in case you’ve already read it), I told you we’re starting off small. The world Hela gets sucked into is pretty harsh, and Jasy and Hela don’t treat each other well. It’s a story with plot twists, betrayal, and death. So if you want to start dabbling into the dark romance genre but don’t know if it’s for you yet, start with When Jasy Whistles.
Check it out if you:
- are in the mood for an enemies-to-lovers story
- love reading a unique story with many twists and turns
- like it when the protagonists get handsy pretty early, despite not liking each other
What’s wrong with you Duke?
Summary: This story is about Dreux and Nöel. Their love story starts off rough: Dreux tries to kill her, but a magic spell activates and forces him to completely change, declaring his love for Nöel. He’s so persistent that she eventually marries him. The problem is: His sweet personality, “Ru,” isn’t always there – sometimes he reverts to his usual self, and Nöel has to deal with actual death threats.
How dark is it?
What’s Wrong with You Duke takes the usual lighthearted romance formula and gives it a dark twist. This one doesn’t feel like a dark Romance and is actually really fun to read at times but the premise is pretty toxic and takes some getting used to. Ru is pretty much only nice because he is getting forced to. And don’t even get me started on the ending, which is pretty tragic (not including the bonus episodes, which thankfully fix that).
Check it out if you:
- like reading a romance manhwa with a very unique dynamic
- like reading a dark romance manhwa that feels tragic but still has a happy ending
- love reading a Manhwa with gorgeous art
The Dawn to Come
Summary: Junyeong’s life is anything but easy. With an abusive mother and no friends at school, she retreats from the world and finds comfort in an abandoned house where she can study in peace. But her quiet escape gets disrupted when Beomjin Kwon, the school’s delinquent, stumbles into the same hideout. Just like this, they start to grow closer.
How dark is it?
The relationship between the MCs isn’t toxic at all, although they do both deal with pushing people away for different reasons. The “dark” aspect of this story are their surroundings. Both their lifes are extremely messed up, and they both suffered a lot of abuse (child abuse, violence, mental disorders and so on)
You should read if you:
- don’t mind a very long timeskip in between
- like when the FL is really strong and can stand up for herself
- love reading a modern completed romance that doesn’t drag whatsoever. After just 69 chapters, the story is wrapped up
Your Eternal lies
Summary: Rosen Walker is the most infamous jailbreaker in history, and she’s now being transported to a maximum-security prison on an island. Her guard? War hero Ian Connor. The entire story takes place on that ship, which makes it feel claustrophobic and intense in the best way. There’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and the tension between them builds with every chapter.
How dark is it?
The character interactions aren’t very toxic and it even gets wholesome at some point, but Your Eternal Lies is dark because of the premise. Ian is in full control over Rosen’s fate, and that imbalance causes constant tension and an angsty feel between the leads.
You should read if you:
- want to feel all the feels – because with this one, there’s no clear right or wrong
- love it when a Romance Manhwa has NO second male lead. What a breath of fresh air
- want a unique setting – no palace intrigue, no academy no office romance
My Reason to Die
Summary: Ji-o’s dream of making the national taekwondo team is put on hold after an untimely injury just before the tryouts. During this difficult period, she meets Gyeol – a mysterious boy who completely shakes up her world. With his tough exterior but genuinely kind heart, Gyeol draws her in despite all the warning signs that come with him.
How dark is it?
Gyeol seems like a massive red flag from the first moment they meet. He ghosts her, abandons her, and basically works as a gangster later on. But it isn’t always like it seems in My Reason to Die – he is the most dedicated ML ever. It’s a story full of angst and it will 100% make you cry, so that’s why it’s on this list.
Check it out if you:
- love stories packed with tension – My Reason to Die delivers it perfectly, with a smooth and gripping flow
- enjoy well-written characters and a story you haven’t read before – I guarantee it
- like it when the ML seems dominant at first but ultimately proves to be deeply caring and supportive toward the FL
Villain’s are Destined to Die
Summary: After playing an otome game, the female lead is suddenly warped into the story itself and finds herself living as the villainess, Penelope Eckhart. The game is set to hard mode, which means every small mistake could cost her life. Her only guide is the affection bar hovering above each of the male love interests.
How dark is it?
Everyone – and I really mean everyone – treats the FL like garbage. Even the maids serve her moldy food. It does get better, but the progress is very slow. Aside from that, Villains Are Destined to Die isn’t an extremely dark read.
Check it out if you:
- are in the mood for a very slow burn romance
- love historical romance manhwa with truly gorgeous art
- enjoy stories where it’s not immediately clear who the ML really is
How to Survive as a Maid in a Horror Game
Summary: You know those horror games where the villain looks innocent but is actually terrifying? That’s Adrian – the devil reborn, cursed to kill in order to survive. How to Survive as a Maid in a Horror Game starts when the FL gets isekai’d straight into this game as Hilda, Adrian’s maid. So yeah, her boss is literally a cursed serial killer. Good luck with that
How dark is it?
Adrian literally is the devil – he’s cursed and has to kill people to save his own life. So yeah, there’s murder and blood. But here’s the thing: he looks completely harmless, and the more you read, you kind of sympathize with him. Which makes it even darker, if you think about it.
Check it out if you:
- don’t mind when the premise is dark, but it’s actually pretty fun in between
- love when it’s not the FL who fixes the ML – but the ML who drags her down with him
- are looking for a yandere ML who actually has a reason for being the way he is
Betrayal of Dignity
Summary: Chloe Verdier needs to find a husband for her sister to save her family – and Duke Thisse seems like the perfect candidate. But when her sister elopes, Chloe has to approach the Duke herself. If you’re willing to give this a chance, you’re in for a treat – the pacing is great, the storytelling is gripping, and the art is absolutely gorgeous.
How dark is it?
Duke Thisse is the biggest red flag ever. He’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants – even if it means manipulating Chloe and making her suffer. He does get his fair share of suffering too, though in my opinion, it could have lasted longer.
Check it out if you:
- love angst where the FL genuinely suffers – not just a little misunderstanding, but real pain
- want a historical romance with a truly unique FL – Chloe has a limp, she’s sophisticated, and she doesn’t break easily
- don’t mind that their first real intimate moments are basically built on lies
I married the Male Lead’s Dad
Summary: Before the FL Aisha reincarnated into her favorite novel “Persona,” she was already a huge fan of Abel, the main character. After starting her new life inside the story, she takes her fangirling to another level by sending him gifts. One day, Abel’s father summons her after hearing about her actions – but here’s the twist: he misunderstands and thinks Aisha’s affections are directed at him.
How dark is it?
It starts off pretty lighthearted but don’t be fooled. The backstory is pretty dark and the characters have their fair share of suffering.
You should check it out if you:
- love a historical romance with a smart FL who actually thinks logically
- don’t mind when a story has more flashbacks than actual story at some point
- love it when the male lead falls in love first (and trust me, he’s a fantastic ML – easily in my top 5)
Tears on a Withered Flower
Summary: Tears on a Withered Flower is a smut manhwa that only has one official English platform distributing it: Webtoon. And because Webtoon hasn’t quite figured out yet how to go about adult content but still wants the reader base, you’ll get Tears on a Withered Flower with white panels and SFX-moan speech bubbles. I’m not kidding, check out chapter 39. But aaaanyway, there’s not much to say about the actual plot except for: “older” very beautiful woman with barbie-proportions gets cheated on by her very dirtbag husband and starts to find comfort in the arms of a younger man who plays a role in front of her.
How dark is it?
This one isn’t dark in a “maybe I shouldn’t read this” kind of way – it’s just toxic through and through. Turns out everyone has secrets and manipulates everyone around them, even the FL. You’ll either love or hate Tears on a Withered Flower, but it’s definitely not your happy Otome Isekai pick.
Check it out if you:
- value spice more than story
- love when an older FL for a younger guy
- don’t mind that the cheating ex still has a very big role in this story
The Broken Ring: This Marriage Will Fail Anyway
Summary: At six years old, Inés chose the handsome heir of the Escalante family as her future husband – simply because he looked good. For fifteen years, Lord Cárcel avoids the marriage, which suits Inés just fine since she secretly wants it to fail. She even urges him to enjoy his freedom, as long as he leaves her alone. But her indifference soon unsettles him, and Cárcel decides to prove he can be the partner she truly needs.
How dark is it?
Inés has regressed three times already – and she doesn’t just shake it off. The flashbacks are heavy, and you really feel suffer along with her because the author takes their time to show her abuse. This is also the reason why it ranks so high on this list, because the relationship between Carcel and Ines isn’t exactly toxic.
Check it out if you:
- like when the ML is completely obsessed with the FL (he does sleep around before things get serious – but she asked him to)
- love it when the FL (who regressed three times already) doesn’t just shake off her trauma
- don’t mind a slow build where the ML has to earn every inch of her trust
I Failed to Oust the Villain
Summary: Valeta gets reborn into a novel she once read – and she already knows how it ends: badly. Her so-called ‘house pet’ Reinhart eventually awakens his magic and kills everyone around her. His obsession with Valeta is the only reason she’s still alive. But that means that she is basically his prisoner.
How dark is it?
Reinhart is completely unhinged – he kills people without a second thought. Both him and Valeta grew up in an abusive household, and it shaped them in different ways: he became cruel, she became emotionally detached. Neither of them is innocent, and that’s what makes this story so compelling. It’s dark because of what was done to them, not just what they do.
Check it out if you:
- don’t mind when the yandere actually gets character development and the relationship becomes less toxic over time
- love when a manhwa has spicy side stories
- love two equally powerful leads – he’s the strongest mage, she’s the most powerful alchemist, and neither depends on the other to survive
The Villain’s Savior
Summary: Elzay has vivid visions of Aseph Randell – a man marked as a villain and fated to die. So she walks up to him and says “I can save you.” Bold move. But changing someone’s destiny isn’t as simple as it sounds, especially when that someone is as messed up as Aseph. This one is far from my favorite, but if you’re looking for dark settings, it could scratch that itch.
How dark is it?
This guy is genuinely unhinged – at one point he tries to stab himself. His backstory is heartbreaking and it shows in everything he does. Their relationship feels toxic every step of the way to be honest.
Check it out if you:
- don’t mind when the FL cries all the time – and I mean ALL the time
- don’t mind when the bad guys feel a bit out of place
- don’t mind when the ML has a very sad backstory (that takes away a bit of the crazy, because you can justify it)
Your Majesty Please Spare Me This Time
Summary: After being executed by the emperor, Laliette wakes up as her 12-year-old self. Determined to change her family’s fate, she heads to the capital to win the trust of the future emperor Rupert – who’s currently disguised as Princess Rapertte. With only a suitcase and some cash, she sets out to become his most trusted servant.
How dark is it?
In her first life, the ML killed her entire family. And the manhwa doesn’t brush that aside – it takes over 100 chapters for the FL to change her mind about him. She secretly hates him for a long time while he falls for her hard. Her conflicted feelings are a real breath of fresh air. And also Rupert’s whole backstory and living situation is very messed up.
Check it out if you:
- love it when the ML falls first and kind of has to grovel for the Fls affection
- like it when the FL doesn’t forget what the ML did before her regression and genuinely tries to work through her feelings
- don’t mind a very unnecessary step-sibling second ML
What it means to be you
Summary: What It Means to Be You follows the relationship between Violet and Winter. Violet fell in love with Winter at first sight, but their marriage quickly turns into a disaster. Winter treats her horribly, driven by his own insecurities and constant misunderstandings. The real turning point comes after Violet suffers a miscarriage. She reaches her breaking point and attempts to take her own life… only to wake up in Winter’s body.
How dark is it?
If you’re in the mood to emotionally torture yourself, What It Means to Be You delivers. Almost every character except Violet is deeply toxic, and the relationship between the MCs is no exception.
Check it out if you:
- like reading a dark romance manhwa with a happy end
- love it when the ML who treated the FL horribly has to grovel for quite a while
- enjoy stories where the angst lasts almost until the very end
Trapped
Summary: At church, Chae-a Han and Yunsu Park look like perfect angels, but they’re anything but. Chae-a is an ex-convict with a sharp tongue, and Yunsu is hiding something worse: he’s a vampire. When Yunsu blackmails her over a murder she didn’t commit, Chae-a seems trapped, but she quickly turns the tables. What follows is a twisted cat-and-mouse game neither of them can escape.
How dark is it?
When it comes to dark romance, it doesn’t get much better than Trapped. They’re constantly trying to outwit each other, with murder and manipulation thrown into the mix, and instead of making each other better, they only bring out the worst in one another.
Check it out if you:
- like the enemies-to-lovers trope
- don’t mind a very slow burn romance
- love reading a story with very intense tension between the protagonists
The Hand that Once Fed
Summary: Evelyn Winter seems like a coldhearted villainess at first glance – she even drove away her former lover and servant, now Colonel Gilath Black. Years later, he returns to take his revenge. But it turns out: They both still love each other?
How dark is it?
The Hand That Once Fed is perfect if you’re in the mood for extremely toxic MCs. There are suicide attempts just to prove a point, constant lying, and zero communication about feelings. And yes, plenty of verbal and physical abuse.
You should read if you:
- love a romance with grey characters who actually do terrible things constantly
- like feeling stressed while reading. Because the angst is real. It is well-written angst and trauma, though.
- don’t mind a very tragic story with lots of triggers. I know you searched for a dark romance, but the FL is so deeply traumatized that season 2 will likely be even heavier
Lady Devil
Official Summary on Tappytoon: “The concept of “forbidden love” was one that Giovinetta Iseult Eurycrates Valdemar was aware of ever since she was a young girl. So in an attempt to stamp out any distasteful possibilities by her father, she was forced to marry someone only to see him be murdered on their wedding night. Despite all this, she was soon set up with another marriage that was bound to be miserable and loveless. In order to escape this fate, Giovinetta resorts to making a wish to a devil. Unfortunately, her desperation caused her to completely overlook the looming consequences of her wish…”
How dark is it?
When you open the first episode, you’re immediately hit with a trigger warning: violence, sexual assault, incest, and domestic abuse. I ended up backing off at that point. If you’ve actually read it, feel free to help me out with this review, because for now I can only go off what I’ve gathered through research. One comment really stuck with me: “not my cup of tea and completely disturbing, full of every messed-up thing imaginable.”
Check it ouf if you (according to reddit):
- want to read a manhwa that feels like Game of Thrones. There’s even incest in this one
- can look past the shock value and focus on the story. Apparently it’s very well written
- want a more realistic take on misogyny in noble society, where power, status, and gender roles are handled in a pretty brutal way
