Estelle meets her untimely death as a valiant knight of the Kingdom of Ersha. But death is not the end for Estelle — three years after her demise, she finds herself reincarnated in the body of Lucifela Aydin, the spoiled and cold-hearted daughter of a count in the Empire of Jansgar. To her dismay, she finds that her country fell to Jansgar years ago, and that she is now betrothed to Zedekiah Heint, the son of a duke and her adversary in her previous life. Can Estelle discover the truth behind her death while attempting to navigate her new life as Lucifela?
Should you read From a Knight to a Lady or not?
From a Knight to a Lady may look like a typical reincarnation manhwa, but it’s far from it. The story is written in a way that keeps shifting your perspective, and you’ll find yourself changing your mind about characters more than once. The reader only gets to know what the female lead knows, which I absolutely love. If our FL Estelle, or Luci as she is now called, is confused, the reader is too. Some parts are slow and harder to get through, especially the murder case in the beginning, which lingers uncomfortably long on a creep’s perspective. Violence against women is a main theme in the beginning, so if that’s a trigger for you, you can skip those chapters without losing important parts of the story. If you want a lighthearted feel-good read, From a Knight to a Lady isn’t the right pick, but if you want grey, realistic characters and good writing, definitely read it.
artstyle and premise
The art is great. The lineart has a scribbly feel to it, and although the backgrounds and side characters can lack detail at times, it shines where it matters most: the proportions and especially the expressions. The emotions of the characters really get conveyed through the art.
The premise is nothing new: the MC gets reincarnated into another body and tries to take revenge or live a new life. But I rarely see a premise like this that’s not isekai and where the whole cast still remembers the person from before.
romance: very slow but satisfying, low on tension
The Romance between Luci and Zed is slow, but it delivers when it counts. While From Knight to a Lady isn’t a story with much sexual tension between MCs, the confessions when they finally open up are really sweet and emotional.
Luci’s interest in Zed grows when he is the only one who talks about her former self Estelle with kindness and admiration. Although she supposedly hates him, he surprises her more and more.
characters: morally grey
From a Knight to a Lady is one of those stories where the characters aren’t black and white. Except for one or two other minor characters, the first crown prince – he is a lost cause. Everyone else does questionable things from time to time but they always seem to learn and grow from the experience. One of the most interesting characters in the story is Khalid. I know that’s hard to believe if you’ve read the majority of the story. But Ink somehow managed to make me feel sorry for that guy – even after hating him throughout. That is great writing right there. Other side characters like the second crown prince and Flo are equally interesting.
protagonists: strong FL, green flag ML
Our FL is Estelle, a former Knight of Ersha, who gets reincarnated into the body of Luci. Completely absorbed in her wish for revenge against Khalid, her closest friend and the one who killed her, she also has to get used to her new body, since she can barely defend herself on her own. It’s rewarding to see how she grows, reflects, and carves herself a place in her new life, all while not forgetting who she was. That said, she does get pushed around by the men in her life quite a bit, and there are no real consequences for them, not even for sexual assault.
I love Zed as an ML. He is an absolute green flag, although he doesn’t seem like it in the beginning. But Zed exists more to elevate the FL than to stand on his own. It works very well, and it’s great to see how he changes the way he does things for Luci, while still being very much on the sidelines.
Read if you…
- love, when most of the cast gets a lot of character development
- want a reincarnation manhwa that puts a fresh spin on a familiar trope
- love when an author really takes their time to show emotion. You get several panels or even entire chapters to sort through trauma and difficult emotions, which gives the story real depth
- love tropes like enemies-to-lovers and having a strong FL
Skip if you…
- are triggered by violence against women and sexual assault. Even if you skip the first chapters, Khalid and the crown prince both cross the line frequently
- mind some storylines that feel out of place (without spoiling too much, on a first trip to Ersha Zed behaves in a way that is completely out of character for him)
- hate it when the bad guys – who really are batshit crazy – get a chance to redeem themselves (in a way)
- want a lot of romance. The main couple gets together very late into the story and there aren’t many lovey dovey scenes. Read this for the strong FL and the story, not for the romance
