Is WEBTOON Upping Their Game with Free-to-Read Chapters?

WEBTOON has changed a lot over the years, and not always for the better. But recently, there’s one update that actually feels like a step in the right direction.

WEBTOON changed a LOT over the years. Believe it or not, there was a time where every webtoon on there was free. I remember the glorious times, where WEBTOON felt like a treasure trove for new reads.

It still felt that way when they introduced Fast Pass, because honestly, it was a fair arrangement. You didn’t have to spend coins. There were also frequent coin events, where you would get free coins for checking out new webtoons – and they were valid for a very long time. And I forgot to mention: there were no additional ads.

If you want to know how you can get free coins on WEBTOON, check out my article.

A lot has changed since then – and most of it not for the better. But recently, I noticed one thing that actually surprised me in a good way. Let’s get to it.

What Webtoon Feels Like Now

Right now, WEBTOON doesn’t feel like a treasure trove anymore. It feels like an ominous labyrinth where you get bombarded with unwanted ads every five seconds. And if you do manage to find yourself some free coins from one of the very rare events, you STILL have to pay 2 coins from your own pocket.

I know it’s not a lot. But the whole point of giving out free coins is for the user to get a whole chapter – and they don’t even get that anymore. Oh, and the coins expire in three seconds. (Fine, it’s 24 hours. But still.)

The Reddit posts of people who complain about WEBTOON are getting more frequent. Many readers write that they’ll quit WEBTOON altogether. I get it, but I’m not going anywhere. It’s still a really good way to discover new reads, and it’s the only platform where you can connect with indie creators on Canvas. So when I actually saw something change for the better, I wanted to share it – if only to remind myself that maybe not all of this is set in stone.

Limited Time to Unlock: A Surprisingly Good Deal

I’m talking about their Limited Time to Unlock events. I mainly ignore these, because they oftentimes offer 3 to 8 free episodes, which really just feels like bait to spend more.

But there is a very positive recent development: with some titles, they now offer almost 100 episodes to read for free for a limited time.

A recent example was Daisy: How to Become the Duke’s Fiancée. The rest of the episodes (it has 186 in total) are still behind a paywall, but this is still a good way to support the creator and check out whether you enjoy a webtoon before buying.

A positive change in Webtoon: More Limited Time Unlock chapters

I do think Daisy is an overrated historical romance and wouldn’t really recommend it, but that’s exactly the point – you get to find out for yourself before spending any coins

What’s Next?

I will keep an eye on these events, and if you’re interested, I could let you know when a “basically everything free” title pops up again. Let me know in the comments!
