Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You: Confusing bits about the anime
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is getting a full TV anime adaptation premiering July 9, 2026. Ahead of the broadcast, Crunchyroll and Abema released the first six episodes early — split into twelve roughly ten-minute ‘mini-episodes.’ From July, the series airs as regular weekly episodes, continuing past episode 6 into new material. But it will show the scenes you already know from the mini-episodes again, so don’t be confused.
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You: Where to Read the Manga
The series has an interesting origin story. Jinushi was already serializing a supernatural manga, Rokurei, when his editor suggested he draw a short manga as a creative-writing exercise. Because his ongoing series was supernatural, he made this one realistic, and since he had a background in customer-service sales, he set it in a supermarket. The result blew up instantly: when the first chapter went up on Twitter, the tweet pulled in more than 190,000 likes within days, and by late June 2022 the series had passed 2.5 million total likes. By January 2026, the manga had over 3 million copies in circulation.
Where to Read Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You in English – and how much does it cost
The official English source is Manga UP! Global, Square Enix’s own platform. Chapter 1 is free, and everything after that you can either buy with coins or unlock through a subscription for roughly 5 dollars a month, which lets you read almost the entire thing. But even with the Vault Pass (the name of the subscription service), you can’t unlock every chapter with your ticket. For the eight most recent chapters, you still have to pay 80 coins each.
The good news for budget readers: Manga UP! runs on a coin/point system where you earn free coins daily just by logging in, which means you can read a steady stream of chapters without paying a cent if you’re patient. And although I know it’s tedious, it can still help you read the manga legally for free.
If you don’t want to download an app, you can also read Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You on MangaPlaza. It was added recently, and although you have to log in, it doesn’t require a download to read. There’s another plus, too: Manga UP! splits each chapter into three smaller parts, while on MangaPlaza you can read the whole chapter in one go. It costs 1.99 USD per chapter, so your better bet is still the subscription on Manga UP! – but MangaPlaza almost always has a deal or coupon available, so it makes sense to check before you buy.
If you prefer to own it, Square Enix Manga & Books publishes the series in print and digital volumes in English, with eight tankōbon volumes out in Japanese as of early 2026. Digital volumes are also available through major retailers like Amazon (Kindle), Book☆Walker, and BookLive.
A quick note on the “free scan” sites that come up in search: those are unofficial aggregators, not legal sources.
Where to Watch the Anime
The anime premieres July 9, 2026, on TBS and its affiliates in Japan, with Crunchyroll streaming it internationally. It’s produced by Asahi Production, directed by Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori, with series composition by Mio Inoue and character designs by Yasuka Ōtaki.
But as I have already mentioned: on June 3, twelve ten-minute mini-episodes covering the first six full episodes premiered on Abema in Japan and Crunchyroll internationally.
