“Selfish Romance” Special Chapters explained: Why Yumin and Hyeondo are talking about Condoms

Selfish Romance has four hidden special chapters most international fans never read. Yumin and Hyeondo lead a Korean public health campaign – here's the recap.

Yumin and Hyeondo are still stuck in that elevator, so while we are all waiting for Season 2, here is a little special treat. In case you did not know: there are four special episodes of Yumin and Hyeondo that are not part of the main canon. And most international readers probably never even got the chance to read them. These are not bonus chapters in the usual sense. They are part of a commissioned health campaign for the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). Yumin and Hyeondo appear as the campaign’s two leads.

Since the specials are only available in Korean on Naver Webtoon, they have stayed relatively under the radar for English-speaking readers. I used translation tools to work through the episodes and put together a recap of the key scenes. So please read this as a summary, not as an official translation.

Why do these episodes of “Selfish Romance” exist?

In August 2025, Gyogyo Park was chosen as the artist for that year’s Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency annual brand webtoon. Since 2018, the KDCA has picked a new webtoon creator each year to share public health messages, mainly about HIV, AIDS, and STI awareness, using their own art style and storytelling. The KDCA is South Korea’s national public health agency and is similar to the CDC in the United States.

For her part in the campaign, Park used the “Selfish Romance” universe and made Yumin and Hyeondo the main characters. This is why these episodes feel different from regular bonus chapters. They are educational, but Yumin and Hyeondo’s relationship helps make the topic feel more natural and less uncomfortable.

“Selfish Romance” Special Episode 1: The Restaurant Scene

The first special episode opens with Yumin and Hyeondo at a restaurant Yumin specifically picked for its good reviews. While she’s happily devouring her food, Hyeondo just sits there watching her, and we get one of the more direct admissions about how he sees her:

Hyeondo (thought): “Because the way she eats so happily is cute and funny…”

While they are eating, the couple at the next table starts talking very loudly about needing to buy condoms before going home together. Yumin gets so embarrassed she eats too fast and ends up with indigestion.

After Yumin recovers, she and Hyeondo end up having the conversation the campaign actually wants you to have:

Yumin: “Using condoms is essential for safe sex. They prevent pregnancy, of course, and also sexually transmitted infections.”

Hyeondo: “I agree with you, Yumin. You should use condoms for yourself, and also for each other.”

Special Episode 2: The Group Dinner

In the second episode, Yumin and Hyeondo go to a group dinner with their friends Taegeun and Jihee. Taegeun has been venting to Jihee about a younger friend who refuses to use condoms (“I really don’t get why you have to use condoms~?”), and Jihee – who clearly knows her stuff – has been helping him build a case to convince him. The whole conversation focus on that topic and at the end we see a little blushing Hyeondo who thinks:

Hyeondo (thought): “I didn’t even talk that much, so why is my throat burning…”

“Selfish Romance” Special Episode 3: The Walk Home

This is the longest of the four episodes. After dinner, Hyeondo offers to walk Yumin to her bus stop. Their walk ends up being much longer, since neither of them wants the evening to end. Yumin, hoping for something, starts a small thought experiment that lets Hyeondo’s love for her show:

Yumin: “Hyeondo, suppose I were HIV positive — imagine that for a moment. You wouldn’t feel uneasy, or want to avoid me?”

Hyeondo: “Whether you had HIV or any other illness, I wouldn’t feel uneasy or want to avoid you, Yumin.”

And of course, that makes Yumin pretty flustered.

Special episode 4: The Bus Stop

The last episode shows the most romance. Yumin gets so caught up reading about STI prevention on her phone, wanting to make sure she has her facts right, that Hyeondo pretends to be upset she’s ignoring him. She panics and apologizes, but a moment later, he admits he was just joking:

Hyeondo: “Actually, I wasn’t sulking. I was just pretending to tease you, Yumin.”

When Yumins bus comes, she delivers quite the suggestive last sentence :

Yumin: “How could I not know that prevention is the most important thing of all? Only by preventing it properly can you reduce the risk of infection close to zero!”

The way she looks while saying it, let’s just say she knows what she’s doing. She gets on the bus. Hyeondo gives her one surprised, longing look – and then starts running after her. His excuse? He wants to keep talking about STI prevention. Sure, Hyeondo. Sure.

The comments on these episodes are hilarious. Everyone is waiting for Season 2 to drop. Here are some highlights:

“Hey you two… since when did you become close enough to talk about condoms so naturally? ………… I haven’t even seen you two properly kiss yet…………”

“Hyeondo’s cheeks turned red Hyeondo’s cheeks turned red Hyeondo’s cheeks turned red Hyeondo’s cheeks turned red…” – and it goes on like that for the entire comment.

And apparently, the whole campaign was a hit, because this was one of the top comments:

“Such useful information… honestly, this kind of stuff doesn’t get taught at school during class hours, and even if it does, you don’t pay attention. But when our favorite webtoon characters come out and explain it, it’s so much easier to focus! This kind of webtoon? Campaign? I think it’s a great idea”
